Evil Dead Burn is definitely not an easy watch. This film is here to burn all the Evil Dead haters once and for all. Yes, you fellas – you are simply not ready for the disturbing and brutally intense experience this film delivers, even if you are a regular follower of the franchise. We have seen five films so far, with the first one setting a benchmark, but this new installment dares to push boundaries further.

It goes beyond comfort levels and offers an extremely unsettling experience to its audience. It’s a ruthless horror spectacle drenched in gore, with a relentless bloodbath that might genuinely make you feel nauseous. And that is exactly what makes it such a terrifying experience. This is why every hardcore horror fan should absolutely buy a ticket – it promises to be an insane ride on the big screen.

The story revolves around Alice (Souheila Yacoub), who is stuck in a troubled marriage with William (George Pullar). After a heated argument outside a bar, a frustrated William drives off recklessly and accidentally hits Jessica, a Deadite from Evil Dead Rise. This incident triggers a chain of possession – first William, then his father. What follows is a horrifying killing spree inside the house after William’s cremation, as one by one, family members fall prey to the evil force.

Joseph (Hunter Doohan) knows about a mystical dagger belonging to his grandfather that can destroy the evil powers once and for all. He teams up with Alice to find it inside the house while chaos, bloodshed, and possession take over. The big question remains – will they manage to find it in time?

The story fulfills the basic requirement of a simple horror plot, and the screenplay largely follows familiar templates. However, it is the film’s visual presentation and graphic violence that elevate it into a spectacular horror experience. The gore execution is absolutely not for the faint-hearted. In fact, it’s quite possible that a section of the audience may find it extremely difficult to sit through. The killing and torture sequences are excessively brutal, and every passing moment introduces a fresh scare.

The film sets a new benchmark for extreme horror and torture sequences, which hardcore fans of the genre will definitely appreciate. Evil Dead Burn challenges the horror lover within you and tests your limits – how long can you endure without feeling uncomfortable? On the downside, the screenplay falters at multiple points. Characters surviving extreme injuries and continuing to fight back with unrealistic strength feels illogical and breaks immersion.

These moments come across as forced and slightly absurd. Souheila Yacoub delivers a solid performance in the lead role and gets ample screen time to showcase her intensity. Most of the film’s heroic moments revolve around her character. Hunter Doohan is equally impressive and brings depth to his role with varied shades. Erroll Shand, Tandi Wright, Luciane Buchanan, George Pullar, Victory Ndukwe, and others provide decent support.

Given that most characters are extreme and monstrous, they aren’t easy to judge in conventional terms, but they succeed in making the audience believe in their world – and that’s what matters. Technically, the film is well-executed despite not having a massive budget. The visual effects are impactful and genuinely get under your skin. The cinematography complements the dark tone effectively, while the editing ensures the film maintains a gripping pace.

Once the horror kicks in after a slightly slow start, there are hardly any dull moments. Sébastien Vanicek crafts a compelling “family reunion from hell” narrative and delivers a horror film that is unapologetically gruesome. He doesn’t hold back, and at times, the sheer brutality leaves you shaken and uneasy. Overall, Evil Dead Burn is here to reignite the franchise’s appeal and deliver a chilling experience packed with extreme brutality and gore. Watch it only if you truly have the heart – and the stomach – to handle it.
